Should You Apply Eye Makeup or Foundation First? A Pro Makeup Artist Explains

Not sure whether to apply foundation or concealer first? I’m going to break down the best order for a flawless finish, and longer wear.

The Correct Order of Makeup

If you’ve been wondering what the right steps are in applying your makeup, then you’ve come to the right place.

As a Pro makeup artist, I’m sharing my tips about how and when to apply your makeup so that it will look better and last longer.

Here are a couple links so you can watch the whole series and catch up!

Foundation or Concealer First?

Does Face Makeup Go Before Eye Makeup?

Are you still doing your face before your eyes and wondering if that’s the right thing? Everyone seems to have an opinion about it.

How do you know what to do or who to listen to? You obviously want your makeup to look its best and don’t want to be doing anything backwards!

A Pro Makeup Artists Opinion…

Here’s the thing – it doesn’t really matter

You are free to do what works for you and your personal makeup routine.

UNLESS – you’re doing a smoky eye or winged eyeliner.

Trust me. In those situations do your eyes first.

When You Should Do Your Eye Makeup First

We are human beings- not robots and sometimes when getting ready, especially when doing a smoky eye- it can get a little messy.

Sometimes the eyeshadow from our makeup brushes end up more underneath our eyes than on top of them! It’s called eyeshadow fallout and it happens to even us pros.

When eyeshadow fallout happens- and it will– you don’t wanna have your makeup ruined. You don’t want to waste your time having to wipe it off and start all over again because now your foundation and under eyes look messy!

Always Do Your Eyes First When Doing a Dramatic Eye

It says a lot of time and a lot of mess to do your eyes first in these situations.

This is the secret that I, and a lot of other make up artist do- especially for weddings and special occasions.

Do your eyes first, and then simply clean up the under eye area and apply the rest of your makeup.

Try this the next time you’re doing a dramatic I look- and I promise, you’re not gonna regret it.
