Here are a couple links so you can watch the whole series and catch up!
Eye Makeup or Foundation First?
Concealer and Foundation for Beginners
Wondering if foundation or concealer goes on first? You’re not alone! In this quick video, I break down the correct order and when to break the rule!
As a pro make up artist, I recommend that you do your foundation first and here’s why… The job of your foundation is to even out your skin tone and cover minor imperfections. We need to let your foundation do its job!
Foundation and Concealer- What’s the Difference?
Foundation is used to even out your skintone. Most of us do not have just one natural shade for our entire face but a combination of different shades and tones in different areas of our face.
The purpose of a foundation is to even out these different skintones so that there is a more uniform appearance, and to prep the skin for makeup application.
Foundation by itself will even out most of the different skintones without needing anything else to help it.
Think of concealer as more of a spot–treatment hero. It has a thicker texture, and not normally something you want to add all over your face.
The Correct Order for Concealer and Foundation
As a makeup artist, my approach is to always start with foundation and then go back and add concealer specifically to the areas where we need a little bit more coverage.
You might add concealer around the eyes or to cover minor skin imperfections that the foundation didn’t quite get all on its own.
You will use less concealer this way, which will help you save more of your product for when you need it.
When You Should Break this Makeup Rule
This rule applies in most situations, except for a few…
If you need to cover specific skin situations- covering acne, hyperpigmentation or rosacea- then use the appropriate concealer or color corrector first, and then apply your foundation on top to even everything out.
These skin variances are often larger in area and require more concealer to hide them. And you don’t want to see a big dot of concealer sitting on top of your foundation.
